Sound familiar?

Your camera roll is full. But where are the memories?

You travel somewhere incredible. You pull out your phone. You take 300 photos. And somehow… none of them quite capture it.

A sketch is different. It’s yours. It captures not just what something looked like but what it felt like to be there. The light on the cobblestones. The wonky door that made you stop. The colour of that coffee cup.

Urban sketching isn’t about being good at art. It’s about slowing down enough to actually look. And I can teach you how to do it.

I’m Taria — I’ve been sketching my adventures for years, I wrote a book on it, and I’ve got 118K people who follow along on YouTube. I have had zero formal art training in my life. Everything I teach, I figured out the messy way so you don’t have to.

Is this for me?

This course is built for you if…

You’ve never drawn seriously before (or it’s been decades)

You travel (or want to) and want something more than photos to remember it by

You want a creative practice that’s actually portable and low-maintenance

You want to fill a sketchbook with real scenes, not made-up doodles

You’re already an intermediate or advanced artist looking to refine technique

You want hyperrealistic or traditional fine-art instruction – that’s not my thing!

The main course

Sketch Your Adventures

Three real-world projects, sketched step-by-step in ink and watercolour. You work from the same photo references I use, and hear exactly what I’m thinking at every decision point.

Start with something seemingly simple: road signs, street furniture, the stuff you walk past every day. You’ll learn how to make the mundane look interesting — which is honestly the whole skill. Bonus lesson: get loose and “splashy” with watercolour.

We level up with a more complex subject: a beautiful ornate doorway. You’ll learn how to edit what you actually see (not just copy it), how to handle tricky architectural detail without getting overwhelmed, and the secret to capturing ornamental features.

Everything you’ve learned comes together to tackle a full building — the ultimate urban sketching subject. You’ll learn how to achieve maximum contrast, handle shadows across different surfaces, and tricks for dealing with “mistakes” (every sketcher needs this).

“Just a quick email to share some exciting news with you. I was out for a doctor’s appointment this week and afterwards stopped at a coffee shop. I brought along my sketchbook and supplies, so I did a quick sketch of the interesting decor. I posted it on Instagram and tagged the coffee shop. They liked the sketch and want to buy it, and also want to talk about doing some other work for them!!!
I am really amazed and encouraged by this. I want to thank you for helping me to gain the confidence to just feel comfortable sketching in a casual style that conveys the mood of the place.”
– Rina

“I just want to tell you how very much I love your videos and teaching style. The pacing is very good and you explain your thought processes so well. Thanks a bunch Taria. Looking forward to the next unit.”

Your instructor

Hi, I’m Taria

I’m a travel sketch artist, a rock chick who rides motorbikes, and someone who figured out urban sketching entirely on her own with no formal training whatsoever.

I’ve been documenting my travels through sketchbooks for years — and sharing the process on YouTube, where 118K people now follow along. I’ve also written The Beginner’s Guide to Urban Sketching, a traditionally published book on the subject.

The way I teach is relaxed, honest and to the point. No jargon. No gate-keeping. Just the actual process, explained the way I’d explain it to a friend. Students consistently tell me the “thinking out loud” approach is what makes it click for them.

I’ve taught beginners from all over the world to fill their sketchbooks with real scenes — and I’d love to help you do the same.
